Not legal or immigration advice. This page reports what Mexican law, the visa guidelines and the official pages of the consulates said on the date we read them. The consulate decides on your visa and can ask for more documents; amounts in dollars, pounds or Canadian dollars change when the consulate updates its exchange rate. Check your consulate's page before you apply.

Do you reach the consulates' figures?

Compared with the figure each consulate publishes, in its currency; other currencies are converted with ECB reference rates of 30 October 2026. For one applicant: family members add their own amount. Nothing you type leaves your browser.

Source: the official page linked in each row (Mexican consulates and embassy consular sections, consulmex.sre.gob.mx), read on 31 October 2026. Amounts are in the currency the page uses. "Income" means net monthly income from a job or pension over the last 6 months; "savings" means the average monthly balance over the last 12 months. Sorting by amount uses ECB reference rates of 30 October 2026.

How the amounts are set: days of UMA

The visa guidelines of the Interior and Foreign ministries (in force since August 2025) count solvency in days of UMA, the reference unit Mexico uses in place of the minimum wage. INEGI set the 2026 UMA at MXN 117.31 a day from 1 February 2026. Multiply and you get the peso amounts; the consulates then convert them.

The London embassy publishes exactly these peso amounts with a pound conversion (HSBC rate of 30 January 2026). Washington writes its own peso figures, MXN 83,640 of income and MXN 1,394,000 of savings, 4.9% and 3.7% above the UMA calculation; the page does not say how they are calculated. US consulates that updated their page at different times show different dollar figures for the same rule, and New York's PDF (5 January 2026) is older than INEGI's announcement of the 2026 UMA (8 January 2026).

Fees in 2026

After the consulate issues the visa you have 30 days from arrival to apply for the resident card at the National Migration Institute (INM), as the consulate pages say (for example Portland); the INM charges the fees of the Ley Federal de Derechos. The amounts below are the 2026 figures of Annex 4 of the Miscellaneous Tax Resolution: "you pay" is the rounded amount ("con ajuste"). Renewing a card costs the same as issuing it.

None of the consulate pages we read asks for health insurance for a temporary or permanent resident visa: they ask for a passport, a photo, proof of income or savings and the fee. If you want health cover for the months you travel and settle in, compare policies before you go.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to get residency in Mexico?

Two payments. The visa at a Mexican consulate (US$56 at the US consulates we read; MXN 990 in the law), then the resident card from the National Migration Institute (INM) in Mexico: MXN 11,141 for a temporary resident card of up to one year, MXN 25,058 for four years, MXN 13,579 for a permanent resident card (2026 amounts, Annex 4 of the Miscellaneous Tax Resolution).

What is the income requirement for Mexican temporary residency?

The visa guidelines ask for a net monthly income of more than 680 days of UMA over the last six months: MXN 79,770.80 with the 2026 UMA of MXN 117.31. Or an average balance of 11,460 days of UMA (MXN 1,344,372.60) over the last 12 months. Each consulate publishes the amount in its own currency.

What is the income requirement for Mexican permanent residency?

For retirees and pensioners: a monthly pension of more than 1,140 days of UMA (MXN 133,733.40) over the last six months, or an average balance of 45,850 days of UMA (MXN 5,378,663.50) over the last 12 months.

Why do Mexican consulates ask for different amounts?

The rule is in pesos and the consulates convert it with their own exchange rate on the day they update their page. A page updated in January can show a lower dollar figure than one updated in May. Washington still writes its amounts in pesos, a little above the UMA calculation.

Do I pay again when I renew my temporary resident card?

Yes. The Ley Federal de Derechos says that renewing a resident document costs the same fee as issuing it.

Is there a discount on the resident card fee?

Since 2026 the law gives a 50% reduction to temporary and permanent residents who show the INM that they are in Mexico for family unity, for a job offer from a registered employer, or invited by an organisation for unpaid activities.
