Thailand DTV visa by embassy: fees and who can apply where (2026)
The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) fee depends on where you apply: 10,000 baht (THB) in cash at the embassy in Vientiane, £300 in London and US$400 in Washington, according to the official pages of the Thai embassies and consulates we read on 30 October 2026. Since 31 August 2026 you also need proof of permanent residence in the country where you apply and a criminal record certificate (Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

Not legal or immigration advice. This page reports what the official pages of the Thai embassies and consulates said on the date we read them. Each mission decides on its own applications and can ask for more documents or an interview; paying the fee does not mean the visa will be granted, and the fee is not refunded. Check the official page of the mission and the Thai e-Visa website before you apply.

Source: the official page linked in each row (websites of the Royal Thai Embassies and Consulates-General, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand), read on 30 October 2026. Fees in US dollars for Los Angeles, New York and Chicago come from the consulates' fee tables, which give the amount without a currency sign.
20 of these pages were last updated before 31 August 2026 (Athens, Bandar Seri Begawan, Budapest, Cairo, Canberra, Chengdu, Chicago, Dhaka, Hanoi, Kota Bharu, Nairobi, Osaka, Phnom Penh, Pretoria, Qingdao, Savannakhet, Tel Aviv, Vientiane, Warsaw, Yangon), so the ones that do not quote the new residence rule may be out of date; 3 of them (Budapest, Cairo, Warsaw) still describe the earlier rule. Several missions publish the DTV rules only as images or in Thai: we list them with "Not written on the page". Check with the mission before you apply.
What changed on 31 August 2026
The Department of Consular Affairs of Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on 28 August 2026 two changes to the documents for DTV applications, in force since 00.00 on 31 August 2026 (Thailand time):
- Proof of permanent residence replaces the earlier "document indicating current location". The Consulate-General in Osaka words it as “Proof of permanent residence in the country/territory where the visa application is submitted”.
- A certificate of criminal record clearance is added, “Certificate of criminal record clearance issued by the country/territory of the applicant’s nationality or permanent residence” (Osaka).
- Applications submitted before 31 August 2026 are processed under the earlier requirements.
In practice this means you apply where you live permanently, not where you happen to be travelling. Some missions spell it out: Singapore grants the DTV only to Singapore citizens and permanent residents; Vientiane asks applicants to be Lao nationals or permanent residents of the Lao PDR; Ho Chi Minh City accepts only a Temporary or Permanent Residence Card from foreigners. Check the row for your mission in the table.

Visa exemption: 30 days since 15 September 2026
For short tourist trips you may not need a DTV at all. Since 15 September 2026 the visa exemption is 30 days: the Royal Thai Embassy in London writes that British and Irish passport holders, "as well as foreign travellers from many other countries", "can enter Thailand without a visa for up to 30 days under the Visa Exemption Scheme for tourism purposes only", and the Embassy in Washington lists 60 countries and territories, the United States among them (the list is an image on its page).
- Eligible passport holders can use the exemption "only twice within a calendar year" (London).
- Immigration officers may ask for "proof of sufficient funds of 20,000 THB per person" and for proof of accommodation and onward travel within 30 days.
- The London page says "they may request an extension of stay for up to 30 days", through Thailand's Immigration Bureau.
- For Indian ordinary passport holders, the Embassy in New Delhi says the 30-day exemption "remains effective from 15 September 2026 until further announcement".

- Prepare the documents on your mission's page: passport, photo, proof of permanent residence, bank statements (usually at least 500,000 baht over 3 months), a criminal record certificate and proof of the purpose (remote work, Muay Thai or cooking course, medical treatment, or being the spouse or child of a DTV holder).
- The DTV is valid for 5 years with multiple entries and stays of up to 180 days per entry, extendable once by up to 180 days at the Immigration Bureau, as the London page and others say.
- Processing can take a month or more (Kuala Lumpur: "approximately 1 month or more"). Fees are not refunded.

Health cover for a long stay
AffiliateNone of the DTV pages we read asks for health insurance (they ask for a passport, a photo, proof of residence, bank statements, a criminal record certificate and proof of the purpose of your stay). A DTV allows stays of up to 180 days per entry. If you want health cover for a long stay, compare policies before you travel.
See SafetyWing nomad insurance (opens in a new tab)
SafetyWing sells travel medical insurance for travellers and nomads online. Some links are affiliate links: we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Insurance is not a DTV requirement on the pages we read and does not change the decision on your visa.
