The consulate decides on your visa, and the agency or university decides on your scholarship after checking your documents. Always read the official call before you apply.
What the procedures say about the money
- “Tali mezzi sono quantificati nell'importo di euro 10.179,85 annuali”: €10,179.85 a year.
- The money must be legal and traceable, preferably yours or made available by your family (relatives up to the fourth degree). Where your country allows it, an account in your name with recurring or locked funds is preferred.
- The consulate checks where the funds come from, the account's movements and whether they fit your family's income and assets.
- Funds can also come from Italian institutions, universities, governments or foreign institutions the embassy considers reliable. A DSU scholarship counts only with a certificate that it has been awarded: “in assenza di esplicita attestazione di attribuzione della borsa, non potrà essere considerata nel computo dei mezzi di sussistenza”.
- You also need housing in Italy; being eligible for a university residence place is not enough.

The procedures give a yearly amount only. Some consulates write it as a monthly amount on their own pages: check the page of the consulate where you apply.

Health cover
When you apply for the permit you must show health cover for medical care and hospital stays: a consular declaration under a health agreement between Italy and your country, or a policy with no limits on urgent hospital care for the whole stay. Once you hold a study permit, the law also lets you register voluntarily with the National Health Service (SSN), for at least €700 a year. The options in detail.
