How many Canadians moved to Ireland in 2026? PPS numbers by month
Ireland's Department of Social Protection allocated 924 PPS numbers to Canadian citizens from January to September 2026, and 1,232 in 2025 (gov.ie, file updated on 21 October 2026). From January to September 2025 the figure was 850, so the change on the same months of 2025 is +8.7%. These are the most recent official monthly figures by nationality, but PPS numbers allocated are not the same as people who moved to Ireland: see what the number is and is not, below.

What this number is, and what it is not
- It is the number of PPS numbers (Personal Public Service numbers) that Ireland's Department of Social Protection allocated to people with Canadian nationality, by month and year. GOV.IE says a PPS number "helps you access social welfare benefits, public services and information in Ireland".
- It is not a count of people who arrived: the online service is open to "customers resident on the island of Ireland and customers resident abroad", some people get a number before or long after they arrive, and some never move or leave again (GOV.IE, Get a Personal Public Service (PPS) Number, read on 30 October 2026).
- It leaves out Canadians who already had a PPS number (for example from an earlier stay), and it counts each person by the nationality recorded by the Department.
- It is not the number of Canadians living in Ireland, which is much larger. Nothing on this page counts residents.

First residence permits issued by Ireland to Canadian citizens (2025)
Ireland issued 1,007 first residence permits to Canadian citizens in 2025, according to Eurostat (data updated on 22 October 2026). That is 160 fewer than in 2024 (1,167), a change of −13.7%. By reason: education 527 (52.3%), work 311 (30.9%), family 91 (9.0%), other reasons 78 (7.7%). This is a different measure from PPS numbers: never add the two together.
